Geographical Distribution of the Indigo Plant

The species of plant, Indigofera, is the third-largest in the family Leguminosae. It consists of almost 800 varieties of Indigo plants.

It is primarily found in the regions of the world mentioned below:

• Over 600 types of Indigo Plant are found in Africa.
• 200 varieties of the Indigo plant are found in Asia predominantly in India.
• More than 80 varieties of Indigo are grown in North and South America.
• About 50 to 60 varieties of the Indigo plant are found in Australia.

The most widely used natural Indigo dye is found largely in the tropical and subtropical zones of the world.
